PGS Province Sends Off First Missionary Team to Vanuatu on a Historic Day

PORT MORESBY, PNG — In a moment filled with faith, history, and missionary zeal, the Province of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands (PGS) joyfully commissioned its first three pioneering missionaries to Vanuatu. The send-off celebration was held on December 8th at the Mary Help of Christians Shrine Chapel, Taurama, coinciding with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception—a day deeply cherished in Salesian history as it commemorates the beginning of Don Bosco’s first missionary expedition.

Presiding over the solemn Eucharistic celebration, Fr. Greg Bicomong, SDB, Provincial of PGS, entrusted the relics of Salesian saints to the departing missionaries. These relics serve as symbols of spiritual protection and inspiration as they embark on a mission that opens a new chapter of evangelization and service to the young in the Pacific.

The newly commissioned missionary team—Fr. Alfred Maravilla, SDB, Fr. Moise, SDB, and Bro. Noce, SDB—will depart for Vanuatu on 13 December. Their mission represents a milestone for the PGS Province, marking the formal beginning of Salesian work in a new country where countless young people await accompaniment, education, and hope.

During the celebration, Fr. Alfred Maravilla conveyed a heartfelt message from Fr. Fabio Attard, SDB, Rector Major, who highlighted the essential pillars of missionary life: strong community living and deep prayer life. These, he said, will sustain and guide the missionaries as they face the joys, challenges, and surprises of their new pastoral frontier.

In his homily, Fr. Provincial recalled the missionary expeditions launched during the time of Blessed Philip Rinaldi, drawing parallels between the fearless spirit of early missionaries and today’s pioneering team. He reflected on the concerns and hopes of Don Bosco as he sent his first sons to distant lands—always with trust, courage, and the conviction that God walks with the missionary.

Fr. Greg encouraged the missionaries with Don Bosco’s timeless words: “Do what you can; God will do the rest. Trust all things to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and to Mary Help of Christians, and you will see what miracles are.”

At the beginning of the celebration, Fr. Shoji Mathew, Mission In-Charge of PGS, welcomed the congregation and invited all the faithful to join in prayerful support for the new mission. The Bomana Oratory youth added a vibrant touch to the occasion by presenting a traditional dance, setting a joyful and reflective tone for the entire celebration.

Following the Mass, the community gathered for photo sessions with the missionaries—capturing a historic moment for the province and expressing their affection, gratitude, and blessings.
