Don Bosco Champions, the ongoing Literacy & Numeracy Program operating from DBTS,
Gabutu, is now into its third year of providing quality free education to school aged children
who are not in school for various reasons, particularly, poverty.
This year 2024, the programme has extended to DBTI, Boroko, where the Salesians
community has welcomed the initiative and the opportunity to help the underprivileged
children of poor families living in squatter settlements in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Working in close collaboration with Fr. Pedro Sachitula (Rector of DBTS) and Fr. Roger
Miranda (Rector of DBTI), the program utilizes the Oratory and Community Development
Centre buildings respectively, holding intensive classes in the basics of Literacy and
Numeracy – four days a week.
Having successfully integrated children from the two previous years into formal schools,
over a hundred children and their families have already benefitted from this program.
At present, a combined total of 106 children have enrolled and are attending classes each
week on allocated days. These children, at the end of the year will be integrated into the
formal education system after undergoing the programs training and formation.
The Literacy & Numeracy Program in its continuity is a project with the primary objective to
eliminate or, at the least, cut down on the high rate of illiteracy and school dropouts in
settlements.
