DBTI Opens Academic Year 2026 on the Feast of St. Don Bosco

Henderson, Solomon Islands – 30 January 2026

Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI), Henderson, solemnly inaugurated the Academic Year 2026 on 30 January, coinciding with the Feast of St. John Bosco. The celebration began with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Salesian Bishop Luciano Capelli, followed by the formal opening of the academic year and the commissioning of teachers.

In his inaugural address, Fr. Robinson Parappilly, Rector of Don Bosco, highlighted the enduring relevance of Salesian education and recalled the journey of the Salesian mission in the Solomon Islands. He noted that DBTI, together with Don Bosco Rural Training Centre (DBRTC), Tetere, was established as part of the Salesian Education Provider to serve young people, especially those preparing to enter the world of work.

Inspired by St. John Bosco, Father and Teacher of Youth, the Salesians arrived in the Solomon Islands with a clear mission: to form young people to be good Christians and honest citizens through technical and vocational education. Responding to the growing need for skilled and values-based training, Don Bosco Technical Institute was established at Henderson in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Honiara, the Government, and other partners. Don Bosco RTC Tetere was later founded to address the needs of agriculture and agribusiness education.

Today, DBTI and DBRTC continue this mission by forming young men and women who are technically competent, morally upright, and socially responsible, contributing meaningfully to the development of the nation.

Addressing teachers and students, Fr. Robinson emphasized that education is not merely about imparting skills and knowledge, but about forming character, strengthening families, and shaping the future of society. Teachers were reminded that they are commissioned not only as instructors, but as educators of life and values, called to guide young people with reason, kindness, and loving authority in the spirit of Don Bosco.

In his homily, Bishop Luciano Capelli exhorted the students to imbibe Bosconian and Gospel values and to build their lives on a strong foundation of love and character formation. During the commissioning rite, teachers made their pledge of commitment before the students, after which Bishop Capelli imparted his blessing.

The academic year was officially declared open with prayers for God’s guidance and the maternal protection of Mary Help of Christians. The celebration concluded with games and a shared meal, joyfully expressing the Salesian spirit of family, faith, and hope.
